Castiglione and Alcantara River

The small but suggestive hill town of Castiglione, not far from the famous Alcantara gorge is rich with history and traditions that stretch back to the Greek domination. From its height of 620 meters it overlooks a part of the valley and The river Alcantara. The olive trees, the big plants of prickly pears with their red fruits, the citrus groves and the banana plants, they all contributes to create a very bucolic mediterranean landscape, where however there are also stretches of damp undergrowth dominated by oaks and willows.

This trek begins in a picturesque stretch of the river Alcantara, from here we will move along the river's banks before starting the climb along a dirt path that winds through citrus plants, olive trees and undergrowth. The path will lead us to Castiglione di Sicilia enlisted, as one the most beautiful village in Italy. Once arrived in Castiglione will walk between small stone streets, we reach a view’s point at the feet of a Norman castle and see how the locals live in a sleepy village away from the hectic city life. There will be time to visit some hidden cultural jems like the church of Saint Benedict.

After a stop in a bar, we will start the descent to the starting point where we will eat some local products, chill out and enjoy a refreshing swim in the river.
