Pantalica's Necropolis

Home to some 5,000 burial chambers of considerable archaeological interest, Pantalica is also a place of great natural beauty, a deep limestone ravine carved out over millennia by the Anapo and Calcinara River. The steep sides of the gorge give way to a fertile valley that supports a flourishing variety of flora including holm, oaks, wild sage,thyme,giant fennel and plane trees. The fauna is no less impressive and you might well see foxes, porcupines, hares, kingfishers and peregrine falcon. The tombs themselves pepper the sides of the canyon and are an impressive sight.

This trekking starts on flat limestone ground, After twenty minutes, we will descend along a trail that runs alongside some graves also of white limestone where the vegetation begins to thicken. After one hour will end up in the lower and most humid part of the valley, here the much more green and dense vegetation will change the landscape making it almost tropical. After lunch, we reach some small pools of a beautiful emerald green where, whoever wants to, can take a refreshing swim.
