Your shore excursion begins the moment you meet your guide at the cruise terminal in Messina. Board a comfortable, air-conditioned 4x4 vehicle and enjoy a scenic drive along Sicily’s eastern coastline, with views of the Ionian Sea, citrus groves, and Mount Etna in the distance.

Mountain Chalet Coffee Stop

Upon arrival on Mount Etna’s northern slopes, a short stop is scheduled at a traditional mountain chalet. This 30-minute break allows you to use the facilities, enjoy a coffee, and take in your first panoramic views of the volcanic landscape before beginning the 4x4 exploration. The stop is designed to make the experience relaxed and comfortable for cruise passengers.

Off-Road Adventure on Mount Etna

Our first stop takes you to the wilder side of Europe’s highest active volcano. Leaving the main roads behind, your driver-guide will take you through pine forests, lava fields, and ancient volcanic formations created by past eruptions. You will enjoy a 60 minutes short nature walk across volcanic terrain, with scenic viewpoints and fascinating insights into Etna’s geology and ecosystem.

Lava Cave Exploration

During the Etna 4x4 adventure, you will also explore a volcanic lava tube formed by past eruptions. Equipped with helmets and torches, you will enter the cave while your guide explains how flowing lava created these underground tunnels. The visit lasts approximately 20–30 minutes and offers a safe and fascinating introduction to Mount Etna’s volcanic geology.

Lunch at a Mountain Chalet

After the 4x4 exploration and lava cave visit, you will return to the mountain chalet for a relaxing lunch break. Surrounded by pine forests and volcanic landscapes, you will enjoy a traditional Sicilian meal with one drink included. The break lasts approximately 60 minutes before continuing toward the Alcantara Gorges.

After the volcano adventure, the tour continues to the spectacular Alcantara Gorges. Formed when lava cooled rapidly after coming into contact with river water, the gorge features impressive basalt walls shaped into unique geometric patterns. You will have time to explore the natural area and access the river level comfortably thanks to the elevator included in the tour.
