Etna Long Hike Valle del Bove

Sicily Active with this Grand tour of Mount Etna will take you to visit the Serracozzo trail one of the most scenic and breathtaking hikes on mount Etna. With a six-hour trek and a fourteen-kilometres trail on the slopes of the highest active volcano on the European continent, away from the beaten path you'll get to see the best that Etna has to offer. During the six hours walking we will cross-sections of woods, ancient lava flows and will walk up to the edge of the lava desert. Along our trekking using helmets and torches, we will descend into the lava tube (a cave) of Serracozzo formed during the eruption of 1971 and finally, we will face the immense and lunar Valle del Bove, a geological wonder with craters, recent lava flows and majestic dikes. The view over the Mediterranean Sea, Taormina and the Sartorius craters will be worth all the effort.

The cost of the excursion includes pick up from your hotel, lunch, walking poles, trekking shoes and water.



One of our guides will pick you up in Taormina or Giardini Naxos, in one hour drive will reach, the start of our trek on the slopes of Etna at an altitude of 1700 meters at the Rifugio Citelli, on the north-east side of the volcano. The first twenty minutes will be uphill with an average gradient of ten per cent through a forest of birches and pines, after a total of sixty minutes we reach Serracozzo at an altitude of 1920 meters, here we will stop for a short break before visiting the homonymous cave. The second part of the trek that will take us on the ridge of the Valle del Bove at an altitude of 2100 meters will last fifty minutes and is the most challenging of the day with stretches where the gradient can reach up to sixteen per cent. After stopping to admire the lunar landscape of the Bove valley, we will continue to climb up to Pizzi DeNeri at an altitude of 2800 meters following the ridge of the north-east wall that encloses the valley. If the group does not want to reach an altitude of 2800 meters the hike will reach a maximum of 2200 meters before descending towards the splendid birch forest and the buttonhole of the Monti Sartorius a geological jewel of great scenic beauty. The positive gain in height of this trek can vary from 1000 meters to 500 meters, according to the path that we will follow once we reach 2200 meters.

The duration of the walk is 6-7 hours including a lunch break.
