What's more, the evolving landscape of wine pairings with local cuisine could redefine your appreciation for this dynamic region. Are you ready to investigate what lies ahead? Let’s see where to go to enjoy a wine tasting on the flanks of mount Etna.

 The Unique soil of Etna

The unique wine of Etna is shaped by its diverse volcanic soils, altitude, and microclimates, creating an exceptional environment for viticulture. You will find that the volcanic ash enriches the soil with minerals, which greatly influences the character of the wines produced here.

The slopes of this Sicilian volcano, ranging from 400 to 1,000 meters in altitude, provide varying temperatures, exposure to the sea breeze allowing grapes to ripen at different rates. This altitude helps maintain acidity, giving the wines an invigorating quality.

As you investigate the region, you will notice the microclimates created by elevation and proximity to the sea. These factors contribute to the distinct personalities of the wines from different vineyards. The cool nights help preserve the grapes' freshness and aromatics, while the sunny days promote ripening.

This interplay of elements not only fosters a unique flavour profile in the wines but also encourages biodiversity in the vineyards. You will see how the local flora and fauna thrive, contributing to the region's ecological balance. The combination of these factors makes Etna's soil truly exceptional, setting it apart from other wine-producing regions.

Notable Grape Varieties

Etna's unique soil directly influences the notable grape varieties that flourish in this volcanic landscape. The region is particularly famous for its indigenous varieties, which are perfectly adapted to the challenging conditions dictated by Mount Etna and the exposure to the sea on the east side.

When you investigate Etna's vineyards, you'll find the elegant Nerello Mascalese, the star red grape known for its bright acidity and complex flavour of red fruits, herbs, and minerals. It's often blended with Nerello Cappuccio, which adds depth and richness to the wines.

On the white wine side, you can't miss Carricante, a variety that thrives in the volcanic soils. This grape produces aromatic wines with a characteristic minerality and crisp acidity, making them incredibly invigorating.

You might also encounter Catarratto, another indigenous white that contributes to blending, offering floral notes and a rounder mouthfeel.

These grape varieties reflect the essence of Etna, showcasing the region's biodiversity and unique climatic conditions. By tasting wines crafted from these grapes, you connect with the land and its storied winemaking tradition.

Top Wineries to Visit in 2025

Investigating the top wineries in the Etna north region reveals a treasure trove of exceptional winemaking. This top five for 2025 is made up on my personal experience as a local Sicilian who loves wines and has a fairly good knowledge of wine making and criteria to judge a wine, but at the end of the day we like what we like.

La Contea

This winery produces white, red and sparkling wines from grapes coming mainly from the Santa Venera district, in the municipality of Mascali, on the north-eastern side of the Etna volcano in Sicily. This agricultural reality was born from the passion for this land of its founder, the entrepreneur Pippo Turrisi and his wife Pina Capizzi. In 2008 Pippo decided to bottle his Nerello Mascalese, giving life to what is the top wines of La Contea: the “Classe 39”.

Today Cantine La Contea, under the guidance of Maria Grazia Turrisi, is a reality of excellence in the Etna wine-growing area that already boasts important reviews and recognitions at a national level. Maria Grazia, taking up the family baton, continues to tell us about Etna through its wines, with the added value of a strong sensitivity to hospitality in the name of refinement and sophistication.

Maria Grazia with the collaboration of her husband and their daughter Ludovica, continues to manage the company pursuing the goal of producing excellent wines using high quality and healthiness standards thanks to an intelligent and rational use of modern technologies, ensuring respect for the territory and the environment through responsible viticulture that has its roots in the true passion of its creator. The food that the Contea pairs with their wines is of good quality. Up on request visit along the grapewines are offered to visitors. If you wish to go for a wine tasting in a tipical Sicilian country house on the flanks of Mount Etna the Contea should be in your bucket list.

Cantine Patria

This is another  family-run winery steeped in history. Their commitment to preserving indigenous grape varietiesmakes it a must-visit. In 1992, Francesco Di Miceli, a distinguished agronomist and oenologist, took over the “Torrepalino” winery, located in Solicchiata, part of the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the northern side of Etna at an altitude of approximately 700 metres above sea level.

You'll enjoy their inviting atmosphere and expert-led tours that probe into their unique winemaking process. The Cantine Patria offers a wide range of blends to choose from, including some international grape. The 1996, 2000 and 2001 riserva are all wines of high quality. If you love bubbles, go for the sparkling Femina Metodo Classico. The family is one of the largest owner of wine yards in the whole island of Sicily. Wine tasting paired with food are available every day. The visit to the estate is a true marvellous experience and Lucia will alongside her husband Graziano are welcoming hosts.

Franchetti

Franchetti confirms itself once again as one of the best wineries on the slopes of Etna. The great attention that Franchetti dedicates to each section of the wine estate also in 2025 gives us a series of wines of great refinement and complexity. Unlike Contea and Cantine Patria at Franchetti tastings must be booked well in advance. Among the wines that I suggest trying, take note of the "Contrada G" and if you want to spoil yourself the “20 anni” signed by Franchetti is one of the most prestigious wine of that the company has produced.

Pietradolce

This winery like the previous four is located on the north side of Mount Etna, and it offer wine tasting experiences in a modern and stunning building that reflect the modern approach to wine making of this Sicilian winery. The Pietra Dolce vineyards extend over 30 hectares on the northern slope of Etna at an altitude between 650 and 950 meters above sea level. At Pietra Dolce winery Respect for the most authentic traditions is combined with a thoughtful use of the most advanced winemaking techniques. My favorite wine from this winery is the Pietradolce Archineri with a fresh and varied aroma and a palate of fine fragrance and finesse. Wine tasting are available but do not expect a real lunch to be served along side the wines but rather some delicious finger food. Cottanera

Once you enter this estate you will feel a sense of peace and the court yard coupled up with lava stone interior saloon will deep you into a truly Sicilia experience. Cottanera wines are the children of a wild active volcano environment and inherit their explosive minerality from the soil. The work in the vineyard and in the cellar makes them refined and elegant, with great balance. My favourite 2025 wine from this wineyard is Cottanera Etna Bianco doc. Wine tastings are available every day.

Pairing Etna Wines With Cuisine

When it comes to pairing Etna wines with cuisine, you'll find that the region's unique flavors can elevate any meal. The volcanic soil and climate create wines that are vibrant and complex, making them versatile companions for various dishes. For instance, a crisp Etna Bianco pairs beautifully with seafood. Its invigorating acidity complements the brininess of fresh fish or the richness of a creamy risotto.

If you're enjoying a hearty meat dish, consider an Etna Rosso. This red wine, with its balanced tannins and red fruit notes, goes hand-in-hand with grilled meats, wild game, or even a rustic pasta with meat sauce. The wine's structure enhances the dish without overpowering it. Vegetarian dishes also shine with Etna wines. A light, aromatic white pairs well with roasted vegetables or a flavorful caponata, while a more robust red complements earthy dishes like mushroom risotto. Don't forget about dessert! An Etna Passito, with its luscious sweetness, can enhance a variety of desserts, from fruit tarts to rich chocolate dishes.
