Mount Etna's north side in winter is accessible from December to March. This Etna winter hike starts at Piano Provenzana, 1,650 metres above sea level, and follows a 4-kilometre snowshoe route through birch forest to the Sartorius craters at 1,850 metres.
The trek itself lasts 2 hours. The full day — including pick-up, equipment fitting and return transfer — is 6 hours total. The Route
The hike starts at Piano Provenzana, 1,650 metres above sea level. The route is 4 kilometres through Etna's north side birch forest. After one hour of walking, the group reaches the Sartorius craters and ascends to 1,850 metres. From the top, the views cover the Ionian coast, the Calabrian coast and the Nebrodi mountain ranges.
Lunch & Equipment
Trekking boots, snowshoes, walking poles, gloves and winter jacket are included in the tour price. At the end of the hike, the group stops at the mountain chalet for lunch. Two menu options are available at €12 and €15 — lunch is not included in the tour price.
Season & Conditions
The tour runs from December to March, subject to snow conditions. In the event of adverse weather, the tour is cancelled at no cost to the participant.
